Portocel - Terminal Especializado de Barra do Riacho S. A. is the only port in Brazil that is specialized in shipping pulp.
It can receive ships continuously and has the capacity to embark 7,500,000 tons of pulp per year.
The port is jointly owned by two of the largest pulp producers in Brazil - Aracruz (51%) and Cenibra (49%).
The only one specialized in pulp
Portocel is of strategic importance both for the pulp companies as well as for the country. Annually, more than 3.5 million tons of pulp are exported through it. Its privileged location with relation to the pulp mills and its operation, focused on pulp shipments, contribute to the very strong competitiveness of the Brazilian product on the international market.
The terminal's transportation infrastructure is complete. Pulp arrives at Portocel by different transportation modes: road, rail or sea (through barges).
Furthermore, the port has special equipment for receiving and shipping bales of pulp, with all operations conducted through the collection of electronic data that is transmitted in real time to a computer network. This system is linked to the Brazilian Custom Department's computer systems via EDI.
Portocel counts with a team of 299 experienced employees who have specific training for the work at the Terminal. To ensure the safety of people, cargo and ships, the Portocel complies with the regulations contained in the ISPS Code.
Aracruz Celulose is the leading producer in the world of bleached eucalyptus pulp. The company is responsible for about 30% of the worldwide offer of the product.
Aracruz's production capacity, of about 3,2 million tonn a year of pulp, is distributed between manufacturing facilities in Barra do Riacho - ES (2,3 million tonn), Guaíba - RS (450,000 tonn) and Veracel - BA (450,000 tonn). Its pulp is exported to Europe, Asia, North America and Latin America.
Cenibra - Celulose Nipo-Brasileira - produces 1,142 tonn a year of bleached eucalyptus pulp produced in its mill located in Belo Oriente, Minas Gerais and special The company exports about 95% of this amount, mainly to markets in Europe, Asia and the North America.
The two companies are renowned for the quality of their pulp, which is used to produce high added value printing and writing, tissue and special papers.
